2013-01-01 · The expansion of radiologic imaging sparked a revolution in the understanding of how brain abnormalities correlate with behavioral disturbances. One area of interest is basal ganglia calcification. The most common presenting symptoms of patients with bilateral basal ganglia calcification (BGC) are movement abnormalities.

Bilateral Basal Ganglia Calcification: Fahr's Disease Fahr's disease/syndrome is a condition defined as bilateral striato-pallido-dentate calcinosis, a neurodegenerative disease with radiological findings of symmetrical and bilateral idiopathic calcifications of the cerebellum, periventricular white matter, and basal ganglia. (Redirected from Basal ganglia calcification) Basal ganglia disease is a group of physical problems that occur when the group of nuclei in the brain known as the basal ganglia fail to properly suppress unwanted movements or to properly prime upper motor neuron circuits to initiate motor function. Primary familial brain calcification(PFBC), also known as familial idiopathic basal ganglia calcification(FIBGC) and Fahr's disease,is a rare, genetically dominant, inherited neurologicaldisorder characterized by abnormal deposits of calciumin areas of the brainthat control movement. Idiopathic Basal Ganglia Calcification (IBGC), also known as Fahr’s syndrome, is a neurological disorder characterized by abnormal deposits of calcium in areas of the brain that control movement. The radiological characteristics of IBGC consist of bilateral and symmetrical calcification of the basal ganglia. The basal ganglia are the most common sites of calcification in the central nervous system in these disorders, and were first associated with this manifestation in a report from the Mayo Clinic in 1939.
