The EU recognises two types of GIs for foodstuffs – Protected Designation of Origin and Protected Geographical Indication – and similar categories for wines and spirits. As of 2012, around 1065 agricultural and foodstuff GIs, some 1561 wine PDO/PGI and 325 spirit GIs have been registered in the EU (the great majority of these are EU names although the register is also open to third countries).

The EU's agricultural product Under EU quality schemes, the names of products for which an intrinsic link exists between product qualities or characteristics and geographical origin are protected. There are: Protected designations of origin (PDO) for agricultural products and foodstuffs, and wines; Protected geographical indications (PGI) for agricultural products and foodstuffs and wines; Geographical indications (GI) for spirit drinks and aromatised wines; Find out more about EU quality schemes. Consult the list of The EU Geographical indications system protects the names of products that originate from specific regions and have specific qualities or enjoy a reputation linked to the production territory. The differences between PDO and PGI are linked primarily to how much of the product’s raw materials must come from the area or how much of the production process has to take place within the specific region. The China-EU Agreement on Geographical Indications is coming into force on Monday, protecting 200 prized foods from both sides.
