By: Jeroen Berger, September 11, 2017 . The IMO NOx Tier III emission standards will take effect in the NECA areas from January 1st 2016. The Tier 3 requirements are applicable to all new build vessels (500 GT and above) with a length of ≥24 metres and sailing within a NECA zone with keel-laying on or after January 1st 2016 with an engine output of ≥130 kW.

They will set NOx emission limitations to all vessels wishing to sail in the Nitrogen Emission Control Areas (NECAs) North America, US Caribbean, Baltic Sea and the North Sea. If you are planning a refit it is important to remember that the IMO Tier IIII certification will also apply when an engine is replaced by a new and more powerful one.

The Tier 3 NOx emissions regulations (IMO3) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) that came into force on January 1, 2016 stipulate an 80% reduction in emissions relative to Tier 1 (but do not apply retroactively). IMO3 regulations apply in designated sea areas referred to as NOx Emission Control Areas (N-ECAs). International Maritime Organization (IMO) is an agency of the United Nations which has been formed to promote maritime safety. It was formally established by an international conference in Geneva in 1948, and became active in 1958 when the IMO 1 January 2020 set as implementation date for significant reduction in the sulphur content of fuel oil used by ships. The decision to implement a global sulphur limit of 0.50% m/m (mass/mass) in 2020 was taken by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the regulatory authority for international shipping, during its Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), meeting for its 70th The IMO NOx Tier application dates are given in Table 1, with the Tier III exemption provisions for engines of less than 750kW and small vessels designed and used for recreational purposes .
