Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) is a new approach to conceptualizing and measuring democracy. We provide a multidimensional and disaggregated dataset that reflects the complexity of the concept of democracy as a system of rule that goes beyond the simple presence of elections. The V-Dem project distinguishes between five high-level principles of democracy: electoral, liberal, participatory, deliberative, and egalitarian, and collects data to measure these principles. Types of democracy refers to pluralism of governing structures such as governments and other constructs like workplaces, families, community associations, and so forth.

The aim of the Varieties of Democracy Research Program is to provide a systematic empirical contribution to the field of comparative democracy studies. First, we will capture democracy's manifold meanings by adopting a set of indicators that are multidimensional and highly disaggregated. Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) is a new approach to conceptualizing and measuring democracy.
V-Dem seeks to capture seven different conceptions of democracy—participatory, consensual,majoritarian, deliberative, and egalitarian, in addition to the more familiar electoral and liberal democracy—in all countries since 1900. The different types of democracy are broken down into components and then into more than 400 specific indicators.
